Are you thinking about getting an RC monster truck for yourself or as a gift for someone else? You’ll want to decide what type of truck you’re looking for. Essentially, there are two choices: on-road and off-road models. For most cases, if you’re really into the “monster” aspect of the truck, you’ll probably want an off-road model. But for some people, the ways they plan to use the truck don’t warrant much more than an on-road model (in which case the extra money for an off-road is probably not worth it).

For most people who are into RC monster trucks, the off-road choices is the way to go. Monster trucks are, by nature, more durable, tougher, and generally more aggressive than other remote control cars. If you want something that will just go on a track, then you probably want a remote control stock car or something like that. But monster trucks are called monster for a reason. With massive tires that can climb over rocks, sticks, and sometimes smaller cars, the whole point of these trucks is to go off road.

Off road is especially true if you plan on using your RC monster truck in a competitive way. For this, you’ll probably want what is called a hobby grade truck. These are more powerful, bigger, more durable, and often faster than the standard toy truck. If you’re going hobby grade, you absolutely want a truck with the most off road power you can find.

Of course, off road isn’t best for everyone. If you’re buying this truck for a child to play with, or as a novelty gift for a friend, or for yourself to just play with around the house or in the driveway on occasion, then off-road probably isn’t worth your money. For such instances, a toy grade truck that runs on electric power is all you really need. Toys comes with plenty of cool features, sound effects, and more. They’re often smaller, and certainly run on electricity rather than liquid fuel.

So a good rule of thumb for RC monster trucks is, “Just for fun, or once in awhile? On-road is enough. Competing or getting rough? Off road is the way to go.”
